2017 Finca Allende Mártires

The top white, the 2017 Mártires comes from a troubled year that suffered frost and high temperatures, which resulted in very low yields and a very early harvest. This had a shorter élevage of nine months in the new French oak barrels where it fermented, the first four months with the lees that were stirred twice per week and then without the lees until bottling. It has a subtle nose, evoking white flowers and juicy ripe white fruit, with a touch of pollen and honeycomb and a faint volatile hint. The palate is fresh and clean, with some spice and smoke from the élevage and a dry finish. It has nice balance and should develop nicely in bottle. 1,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

2016 Finca Allende Mingortiz

There is a faint animal note on the nose of the 2016 Mingortiz that seems to dominate the profile, which includes hints of leather, licorice and fountain pen ink. The fruit is black rather than red. It was generously oaked, and the oak is especially noticeable on the palate, which is normal, because the wine is very young. This is a lot less ripe than the previous year, and even if the alcohol is not much lower, it feels better balanced. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

2016 Finca Allende Gaminde

The nose of the 2016 Gaminde is creamy, balsamic and spicy, with plenty of new oak undertones and ripe fruit without excess. This is a clean, modern, generously oaked Tempranillo, with plenty of tannins and oak-related flavors, and it needs a couple of years in bottle to digest the wood. It’s nicely structured and shows power with balance in its style. 12,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2018.

2016 Finca Allende Allende Nature

I find the nose of the 2016 Allende Nature to be really attractive, clean and fruit-driven with contained ripeness and a medium-bodied palate with finegrained tannins. It’s quite aromatic and floral and transmits a sense of harmony. Very good showing. It feels quite different from my previous tasting; it has evolved positively. 2,500 bottles were filled in April 2018.

2015 Finca Allende Allende Blanco

The 2015 Allende Blanco, mostly Viura with some Malvasía Riojana (Alarije), fermented with indigenous yeasts in new French oak barrels, where it aged with the lees and bâtonnage twice per week for seven months and a further seven months without the lees after it was racked. It has a classical oaked white Rioja nose, with some nutty undertones, spice, dried flowers and a hint of petrol. The palate has focused, intense flavors, and the oak is nicely integrated. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017.

2014 Finca Allende Allende

The eponymous red 2014 Allende shows some evolution on the nose, with notes of honey and beeswax, an herbal touch and some spices. It feels like a lighter year, a bit more fragile and delicate. This is a year to drink sooner rather than later. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2018.
